The first major music festival was the legendary Woodstock, held in 1969 in New York. An expected 50,000 revellers swelled to more than 400,000, and were entertained by the likes of Jimi Hendrix, Santana, Janis Joplin and The Who;
the festival phenomena was born…
The following year saw the Isle of Wight festival play host to Bob Dylan, The Moody Blues, T Rex and the Doors, performing to a record-breaking 700,000 people. Sadly the festival was a victim of its own success, and objections by residents meant that the Isle of Wight’s answer to Woodstock would disappear for 32 years.
The founders of the Glastonbury and Stonehenge festivals took their inspiration from the IOW however, and although Stonehenge fell by the wayside in 1984 due to concerns about the preservation of the stones, Glastonbury is still going from strength to strength, and in 2009 the IOW Festival was back, making the UK the prime European destination for music lovers worldwide.
